It is technically feasible to use a projector as a temporary desk lamp in an emergency, yet it never serves as a qualified long-term replacement for a standard desk lamp, with fundamental differences in lighting principles, light characteristics and practical usage scenarios setting clear boundaries between the two lighting devices. A desk lamp is designed to emit concentrated, uniform directional light that directly illuminates the desktop, books and writing areas within a short distance. Its light source usually adopts soft diffuser panels to avoid harsh glare, meets national eye protection illumination standards, and can stably provide 300 to 500 lux of local brightness for close-range reading, writing and office work. In contrast, a projector is a projection imaging device that outputs light onto a distant wall or curtain to form pictures. Its original light beam is highly concentrated and high-brightness; when you directly use the projected light as desktop lighting, you can only obtain scattered, uneven ambient light rather than focused local illumination. The desktop will appear partially bright and partially dim, which cannot meet the basic illumination requirements for close work.

Using a projector for long-term desk lighting will bring multiple hidden dangers to eye health and the service life of the device itself. First of all, the projected light belongs to indirect ambient light with low color rendering index in most default modes. When you read books or write under this kind of light, the color restoration of printed text and paper is poor, your eyes need to constantly adjust the pupil to adapt to unstable light brightness, which is extremely likely to cause visual fatigue, dry eyes, blurred vision and myopia deepening, especially for students who need long-time desk study. Secondly, projectors rely on built-in heat dissipation systems to work continuously. The original design intention is intermittent use for watching videos, movies and playing games. If you keep the projector running for several hours every day as a desk lamp, the internal bulb, LED light source and mainboard will keep generating high heat. Long-term high-load operation will accelerate the aging of the light source, lead to rapid brightness attenuation, shorten the overall service life of the projector, and even trigger automatic shutdown or hardware burnout caused by overheating.

In addition, the placement limitation also makes the projector unable to replace a desk lamp reasonably. Ordinary desk lamps can be placed freely on the desktop, with adjustable lamp arm angles to flexibly cover the work area. Most household projectors need to be placed at a distance of one to three meters from the projection surface to form a normal image. If you put the projector close to the desktop for lighting, the projected picture will be extremely oversized and cannot form effective local lighting. Even if you turn off the imaging function and only retain the light source output, the strong direct light will easily shoot into human eyes, forming strong glare and causing temporary visual discomfort. In summary, a projector can only be used for short-term emergency ambient lighting when the desk lamp is broken, but it is never recommended as a daily desk lamp for study, office and reading scenarios.
