The service life of a projector bulb varies significantly depending on the bulb type, which is the core factor determining its durability. Traditional halogen bulbs, the earliest mainstream projector light sources, have a relatively short lifespan, generally ranging from 2,000 to 4,000 working hours. These bulbs rely on tungsten filament luminescence, which is prone to aging and burnout after long-term high-temperature operation, and their brightness will gradually decay with usage time, leading to blurred projection images. They are mostly used in old-fashioned entry-level projectors and have been gradually phased out by the market due to poor durability.
Metal halide bulbs, an upgraded version of traditional bulbs, are widely used in mid-range commercial and household projectors. Their service life is extended to 4,000 to 6,000 hours. This type of bulb adopts improved gas-filled luminescence technology, which reduces filament loss and high-temperature attenuation. However, it still has obvious brightness decay problems. After about 5,000 hours of use, the projection brightness will drop to less than 50% of the original, requiring users to replace the bulb to restore viewing effect. Frequent startup and shutdown and long-term continuous high-brightness operation will also shorten its service life.
Modern new light sources, including LED and laser bulbs, have achieved a qualitative leap in lifespan. LED projector bulbs have a service life of 20,000 to 30,000 hours, while laser bulbs can last 30,000 to 50,000 hours. These light sources have no fragile filament structure, feature low heat generation and stable luminescence, and can maintain stable brightness for a long time. Under normal household use frequency, they can work normally for 8 to 10 years without replacement, greatly reducing later maintenance costs and becoming the mainstream configuration of current new projectors.
