Projector users’ preference for light source types is primarily driven by their usage scenarios, budget constraints, and core demands for image quality and convenience. In today’s market, three main types of light sources dominate: LED, laser, and traditional bulb, each with distinct characteristics that cater to different user groups. Understanding these preferences requires delving into the trade-offs between brightness, lifespan, portability, and cost, as users prioritize different factors based on how they intend to use the projector.

For casual users and renters, LED light sources are the most popular choice, thanks to their long lifespan and portability. Most LED projectors offer a lifespan of up to 20,000 hours, meaning even if used for 4 hours every day, they can last for more than 13 years without needing a light source replacement—eliminating the hassle and cost of frequent bulb changes. Additionally, LED projectors are typically lightweight and compact, making them easy to carry for outdoor activities like camping or temporary setups in rental apartments. While their brightness (usually around 1500 ANSI lumens) is lower than that of laser or bulb projectors, it is sufficient for indoor use in dimly lit rooms such as bedrooms, which aligns with the needs of casual users who mainly watch movies or stream content occasionally. The affordability of LED projectors, with entry-level models available for under 1000 yuan, further strengthens their appeal to budget-conscious users.

In contrast, laser light sources are favored by quality-oriented users, including home theater enthusiasts, gamers, and professional users. Three-color laser projectors, in particular, are hailed as a “daytime viewing savior” due to their high brightness (easily exceeding 3000 ANSI lumens) and wide color gamut (often covering 110% BT.2020), which deliver vivid, detailed images with accurate color reproduction and clear dark details. Laser light sources also have a long lifespan comparable to LED, and advanced speckle reduction technology reduces eye strain, making them ideal for extended viewing sessions. Although laser projectors have a higher price point—starting at around 4000 yuan—users who prioritize immersive viewing experiences are willing to invest in this technology. Gamers, for example, benefit from the high brightness and fast response times of laser projectors, while home theater enthusiasts appreciate the cinema-like image quality they provide.

Traditional bulb light sources, once the mainstream, are now less preferred by most users due to their inherent drawbacks. While they offer good color accuracy that is close to natural colors and a wide range of brightness options suitable for both home and office use, their short lifespan (only a few thousand hours) and high maintenance costs are significant deterrents. Replacing a bulb can cost several hundred yuan, and bulb projectors are sensitive to heat and require regular maintenance to avoid overheating damage. As a result, bulb projectors are mostly chosen by transitional users who have limited budgets and can accept frequent maintenance, or by those who need a temporary solution before upgrading to LED or laser models.
