Unlike standard projectors with a throw ratio of 1.5:1 to 2.0:1, short-throw projectors are specifically designed to project large images from relatively short distances, making them ideal for small spaces such as apartments, bedrooms, classrooms, and small meeting rooms where long installation distances are not available. Generally, the throw ratio of short-throw projectors ranges from 0.4:1 to 1.0:1, which is a key distinction from ultra-short-throw (UST) projectors that have an even smaller throw ratio of 0.19:1 to 0.4:1.

To better understand this parameter, lets take practical examples. A short-throw projector with a 0.5:1 throw ratio only needs a distance of 3.6 feet to project a 100-inch screen, while a model with a 0.69:1 throw ratio requires about 5 feet for the same screen size. This means that even in a room with limited depth (3 to 8 feet), users can easily get a large-screen experience without worrying about the projector taking up too much space or causing shadows from people walking between the projector and the screen. For instance, the Optoma GT1080HDR, a popular short-throw projector, has a throw ratio of 0.5:1, allowing it to project a 120-inch image from just 4.4 feet away. Additionally, some short-throw projectors, such as the BenQ TH671ST with a 0.69:1 throw ratio, are widely used in gaming and home entertainment scenarios, as their short projection distance reduces input lag and ensures a more immersive experience. It is worth noting that the throw ratio may vary slightly among different brands and models, but the overall range of 0.4:1 to 1.0:1 remains consistent for most short-throw projectors on the market today.
