3LCD and DLP are the two most mainstream imaging technologies for modern projectors, and they have essential differences in imaging principles, color performance, picture quality and applicable scenarios, which determine their respective positioning in the market. 3LCD is a liquid crystal imaging technology, which relies on three independent LCD panels corresponding to the three primary colors of red, green and blue. The light source passes through the three LCD panels respectively, modulates the three primary color lights, and then synthesizes a complete color picture through the prism and projects it out. Its core feature is independent color imaging, with highly restored and natural colors.
DLP, short for Digital Light Processing, adopts digital micromirror chip imaging technology. Its core component is a DMD micromirror chip covered with tens of thousands of tiny controllable micromirrors. The light source irradiates the rotating color wheel to generate alternating red, green and blue color light, and the micromirrors flip at high speed to reflect the color light and form a picture. DLP technology is famous for its high contrast and clear black-and-white layering. The picture has strong three-dimensional sense, sharp edges and details, and it is not easy to produce picture blur and light leakage.
In terms of actual use experience, 3LCD projectors have outstanding advantages in color reproduction, with bright and real colors, uniform screen brightness, no color difference in the whole screen, and are very suitable for home movie watching, art viewing and daily office demonstration scenarios that require high color fidelity. However, its contrast is relatively general, and the dark field details are slightly insufficient. DLP projectors have excellent contrast performance, pure black picture performance, stronger dynamic picture stability, and are more suitable for home theater, game projection and large conference room demonstration scenarios. In addition, DLP projectors are smaller in size, lower in heat generation and longer in service life, while 3LCD projectors have higher light utilization efficiency and softer pictures.
